Product Description The new Reader (model PRS-505) features a svelte body design. Re-styled controls more closely mimic paper page turns and allow for quick, intuitive navigation.A next-generation electronic paper display delivers faster response and a higher contrast ratio for easy reading even in bright sunshine. Eight levels of gray scale provide for crisp and clear text, images, and graphics. This device is designed for people on the go, this device is compelling because it allows them to carry a wide variety of reading materials whether they are on a cross-country flight, in a doctor's office waiting room, or at a beach resort. The Reader can handle a stack of books and other documents that people would rather not carry, yet offers a 'book-like' reading experience unavailable with other electronic devices. With the capacity to store up to 160 typical eBooks, the Reader can act as a mobile library. Expansion slots for Memory Stick Duo media or SD memory cards make the device's library potential practically limitless.More advanced users will appreciate the USB-based mass storage capability that allows them to use the device as a portable drive for the direct transfer of documents, images and other files to the Reader. A new auto sync feature also lets users set up folders with books and documents that can be automatically synchronized when the device is connected to a PC.

My wait is over... January 5, 2009 A. P. Turley (Chicago, IL USA) The PRS-505 is a great gift for a tech savvy bibliophile. The form factor and display clarity make for an excellent reading experience in office and outdoor lighting. It's a gray scale only reader and not the fastest text reader available. Still, it displays PDF files well, has fine battery life, and reads from SD-cards (and Sony's memory sticks). Overall, it's easy to recommend. I notice that mine displays 16 shades of gray rather than the 4 shades I was led to expect. Thanks to the latest firmware upgrade, it rotates, resizes and reflows text in PDFs fairly well. And, it is generally quicker than earlier efforts. It seems fairly solid and sturdy. To date, I've suffered no hang ups, system failures, excessively long refresh waits with PDFs of 400+ pages, or any other disappointments reported by less favorable reviews. Of course, there's no a built-in backlight (though a lighting accessory's available). It's grayscale only, slower than reading PDFs from the laptop, and the AC adapter is an unincluded extra, which may be an issue for those who would use the reader as an MP3 music player. Overall, I am very pleased with mine, would buy one again, and have already recommended the device to friends and colleagues - even without holiday pricing.

I received this as a gift. My reader fully charged won't get me through one book. I'm very disappointed with this item.
Sony PRS-505 E-reader December 28, 2008 Joyce Moore I love it! Currently I have 45 books and two CD albums downloaded and still have sufficient memory for more. I can quickly download today's newspapers from Feedbooks for viewing at my leisure. I drop them in a "collection" that I titled "Current Events" so they are all in one file and I don't have to search for specific news sources, then just delete them as I finish reading. Nice! I found that Windows Media will convert my CD's to MP3 format so I can listen to my favorite album in the background if I want. I use the ear buds from my Ipod so no added expense there and the sound quality is quite good! The Sony 505 is $100 less than a Kindle and available now! Big selling point for me as the Kindle isn't even available till spring! I ordered mine on Dec 18th and it arrived on Dec 23rd, even after it was waylaid in Portland, Or. for two days due to a major snowstorm. I like the feel of the metal case and it is very classy looking. And it comes with a soft leather cover and USB charging cord. I've not had any problems with the buttons that other commentators mentioned. A bit of a learning curve with the help files that could have been a little more complete, but still I am very pleased. The E-ink technology is very nice, easy to read, and a big improvement over a reader(Palm Pilot) I had a few years back.
an environmentally responsible way to expand a library December 27, 2008 Jade (boston ma) I've had my new reader for over a month now and have noticed that I enjoy reading more and read more than ever. Even though its out of pocket costs to begin seems much, but can one put that same thought to the cost of a tree? Like others, I've read about this model and the kindle for hours to find out which is best. Truly one needs to decide that what are their own needs and what is available to either machine in the books that they read. I also don't want to have the instant buy function since one can truly be broke in buying books. If you look hard enough, sometimes they are cheaper off site sony and amazon, even free. The pdf files are easily transferred and read. Many of my professors have begun using pdf files instead of textbooks and there are many text books that are designed for the reader, not all. I've found that the buttons are in the right position for page turning with no accidental pushes. The battery life didn't seem to last the 7000 pages claimed is my one gripe but I've only had to charge it once in the last month of reading. I read every day.
Every avid book reader needs this! December 26, 2008 Mom from Mesa (Mesa, AZ USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received this item as a gift this year, not even knowing something like this existed. I surely would have paid the $299 myself for such a great product. The screen is really easy on your eyes, looking so close to a real book you may find yourself reaching for the corner to flip the page! It is compact and no heavier than a paperback novel. It fits into my purse and I take it everywhere I go no, always having a book on hand (1000's of books actually) for the unexpected wait in line, or trip to the doctors office. I even downloaded my favorite magazines and newspapers! I bring it to work and read on my breaks. Every one of my co-workers has asked me what it is, and where they can get one for themselves! A must have for the avid reader!
